The value of an 1881 ten dollar gold coin (Liberty Head $10 Gold Eagle) varies significantly based on its condition (grade) and where it was minted.

Here’s a breakdown of the approximate values for different mints and grades as of August 2025, according to NGC Coin Explorer data and recent sales figures:

  • Philadelphia (no mint mark):

– Circulated condition (Good to XF): around $1795 – $1875

  • Carson City (CC mint mark):

– Circulated condition: significantly higher than Philadelphia minted coins.
– Uncirculated (MS62): can be worth around $43,600.

  • New Orleans (O mint mark):

– Circulated condition: around $1770 – $7500.
– Uncirculated: can be worth as much as $25,000.

  • San Francisco (S mint mark):

– Circulated condition (Good to XF): around $1770 – $1850.
– Uncirculated (MS60-MS62): around $1870 – $1945.
– Uncirculated (MS63): around $2350 – $3750.

  • Proof:

– Extremely rare, with values estimated around $63,000.

Factors influencing value:

  • Mint Mark: Coins minted in Carson City (CC) and New Orleans (O) are generally rarer and more valuable than those minted in Philadelphia or San Francisco.
  • Condition/Grade: The better the condition of the coin (e.g., less wear and tear), the higher its value. Coins are graded on a scale from Poor (P) to Mint State (MS) 70.
  • Mintage: Lower mintage figures (the number of coins originally produced) typically translate to higher values. For instance, the 1881-O had a mintage of only 8,350 coins.

Important Notes:

  • These are approximate values based on available data and market trends. The actual value of a specific coin can vary based on individual characteristics and the current market at the time of sale.
  • The melt value of the gold content in an 1881 $10 gold coin is around $1620.90 to $1641.85 as of August 2025, but the numismatic value (its value as a collectible) is significantly higher.
  • For an accurate assessment of your specific coin, it’s recommended to consult with a professional coin appraiser or grading service.
