The value of a Susan B. Anthony dollar coin can vary significantly depending on several key factors:

  • Condition: Uncirculated and proof coins generally command higher prices than circulated ones.
  • Mint Mark: Look for the P (Philadelphia), D (Denver), or S (San Francisco) mint mark, which is located on the coin to the left of Anthony’s portrait.
  • Date and Variety: Specific dates and varieties, like the 1979-P Wide Rim, are particularly sought after by collectors.
  • Errors: Coins with errors, such as off-center strikes or those struck on the wrong planchet, can fetch high prices.

Here’s a breakdown of values for different types of Susan B. Anthony dollars:

  • Common Circulated Coins: Most circulated Susan B. Anthony dollars are only worth their face value of one dollar. Some may sell for slightly more, averaging around $1.05-$1.35.
  • Uncirculated Coins: In uncirculated condition, values for common dates and mint marks (like the 1979-P Narrow Rim) can range from $5 to $10.
  • Proof Coins: Proof coins, particularly those with a “Deep Cameo” finish, can be more valuable, especially the 1979-S Proof Type 2 (clear “S” mintmark) which can be worth $50 – $150 or more.
  • Rare Varieties: The 1979-P Wide Rim (“Near Date”) variety is a notable rarity, with values ranging from $13.50 to $1,900 in uncirculated condition and fetching up to $60 in circulated condition. The Wide Rim variety is distinguishable by the date appearing closer to the rim than the more common Narrow Rim variety.
  • Error Coins: These coins, such as the 1979-D Double Die Obverse (DDO) and Double Die Reverse (DDR), or coins with blob errors or struck on the wrong planchet (like a quarter or nickel), can be extremely valuable, sometimes reaching thousands of dollars at auction. A 1979-P SBA struck on a quarter planchet is considered one of the rarest Susan B. Anthony coins.
  1. Identify the year and mint mark. The mint mark is typically a letter (P, D, or S) located to the left of Anthony’s portrait.
  2. Examine the condition of the coin. Look for signs of wear, such as worn-down details or scratches. Uncirculated coins should have their original mint luster.
  3. Check for any errors or varieties , especially the 1979-P Wide Rim variety.

If you believe you have a valuable coin, consider consulting a professional coin dealer or appraiser, or having the coin graded by a reputable third-party grading service.

How do you tell if you have a rare Susan B Anthony coin?

I can help with that. How can you tell if a Susan B Anthony coin is rare? Look for the mint mark and the year. Coins from 1981, produced only for collectors and not for circulation, tend to be rarer. The 1999 minting is also less common.

Key Differences Between Type 1 and Type 2:
Type 2 has the “S” mintmark (struck in San Francisco as part of proof sets). Production Quality: Type 1 is a circulating one. Type 2 is a proof 1981 Susan B Anthony dollar uncirculated coin.
