The value of a 1971 US One Dollar Coin (Eisenhower Dollar) depends on several factors, including its mintmark, condition, and any potential errors or varieties.

Here’s a breakdown of the typical value ranges based on different factors:

  • Average circulated condition: A 1971 Eisenhower dollar in average circulated condition is generally worth between $1 and $3.
  • Uncirculated condition: 1971 Eisenhower Dollars in pristine, uncirculated condition, graded MS60 or higher, can fetch higher prices. For example, an MS60 graded coin may be valued at around $13, and at MS65, the value can increase to about $32. Some sources suggest a range of $10 – $80 for uncirculated coins depending on the specific grade. Higher-grade coins (MS67+) can command significantly higher prices, potentially reaching thousands of dollars.
  • Proof condition: Proof coins, struck with special dies and featuring a mirrored finish, can be more visually striking and valuable. A 1971 S Eisenhower Dollar (Proof) can be valued between $6 – $35. 1971 S Silver Eisenhower Ike Proof Dollars graded PR69DCAM have sold for around $40.
  • Philadelphia (no mintmark): While these coins were struck for circulation, well-preserved examples can be valuable. An MS65 graded coin can be worth approximately $80. Some sources also list potential values of up to $12,000.
  • Denver (D mintmark): Coins from the Denver Mint tend to be sharper and cleaner, making them more desirable for collectors. In circulated condition, a 1971-D Eisenhower dollar may be worth between $1.05 and $1.50. In pristine, uncirculated condition, they can sell for up to $2,350. An example of an uncirculated (MS60) 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar was listed for $17. A circulated 1971 D Eisenhower Dollar in “about Uncirculated” condition was available for $5.49.
  • San Francisco (S mintmark) – Proof Coins: 1971 S Eisenhower Dollars, particularly in proof format, are sought-after due to their special composition and limited mintage. An MS65 graded 1971 S Silver Eisenhower Dollar sold for $18.50. According to the NGC Price Guide as of August 2025, a 1971-S Eisenhower Dollar in circulated condition is worth between $12.75 and $14. However, on the open market, pristine, uncirculated conditions sell for as much as $6,250.
  • Errors and Varieties: Certain errors and varieties can significantly increase the coin’s value. Examples include:

– Peg Leg: This error occurs when a serif is missing from the letter “R” in “Liberty” due to overpolishing the obverse die. A 1971 D Eisenhower Dollar with a “Peg Leg” error and off-center strike is listed for $13,500. A circulated coin with this error could be worth $10 – $40, while an MS60 graded coin could be worth $50. The best known specimen, graded MS68, is valued at $6,750.
– Double strikes: If the planchet is struck multiple times and shifts between strikes, the image will appear twice. A 1971 S Proof Silver Dollar with a double struck obverse graded PR63 was auctioned for nearly $4,000.
– Repunched mint mark: A portion of the 1971 S silver dollars have a repunched “S” mintmark. An MS67 graded coin with this error brought over $8,000 at auction.
– Double Die: If the die shifts during the multiple strikes required to make the design, errors can occur on either side of the coin. One deep cameo proof coin with a double die error on the obverse was valued at nearly $1,400 at auction.

Thanks for asking. Errors and Varieties
Sometimes, the 1971 dollar coin value can increase due to certain rare errors or variations that occur during the minting process. Examples of these include double strikes, misaligned dies and over-polished coins.

Good point! If your Ike dollar has an “S” mint mark on the obverse, it is silver clad, or 40% silver. You can also check the edge of the coin for a silver stripe. If you find one, you most likely have a 40% silver, or silver clad Eisenhower dollar.
