Independent Coin Graders (ICG) is a legitimate coin grading company, but it’s important to understand its reputation and position within the coin collecting community.

  • Compared to other services: While ICG is a valid grading service, it is generally not considered in the same tier as the top two services, PCGS and NGC. Some collectors perceive ICG’s grading standards as being less strict or consistent than NGC or PCGS.
  • “Buy the Coin, Not the Holder”: This common phrase in the coin collecting world applies particularly to coins in ICG holders. It emphasizes the importance of evaluating the coin itself, regardless of which company graded it.
  • Market Acceptance: ICG graded coins may not command the same prices as those graded by PCGS or NGC. Some sources suggest that ICG coins often sell for a grade or two lower than their encapsulated grade.
  • Potential for Overgrading: There’s a perception among some collectors that ICG might be more lenient with grades, sometimes potentially assigning grades that are a point or two higher than what the top companies might. However, some users report experiencing conservative grading, according to testimonials on the ICG website.
  • Authentication: ICG is considered a reliable authenticator, ensuring that the coin is genuine.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: ICG generally offers lower grading fees compared to PCGS or NGC.
  • Good Option for Certain Coins: For less expensive or common coins where maximum market value isn’t the primary concern, ICG can be a suitable choice. Some collectors also find it a good option for high-quality “keepers” for their personal collection.
  • Faster Turnaround Times: Some individuals have reported positive experiences with ICG’s turnaround times.
  • Inconsistent Grading: There are instances where ICG graded coins with straight grades (no “details” designation) might be considered “cleaned” or have other issues by PCGS or NGC, and their grading can be off by a couple of points.
  • Lack of Resources: ICG holders may be less prevalent in the market, making it harder to find research resources or compare prices compared to the other services.
  • Market Value: Coins graded by ICG may not hold the same market value as those graded by the other, more established services.

ICG can be a good option for certain collecting goals, particularly for authenticating coins or for lower-value pieces where cost-effectiveness and relatively quick turnaround are important. However, it’s crucial to be aware of the potential for inconsistent grading and a potentially lower resale value compared to coins graded by PCGS or NGC. It’s recommended to buy the coin, not the holder , and carefully evaluate the coin’s condition yourself, regardless of the grading company.

From my experience, Any Customer may resubmit any coin for review of the grade assigned by ICG if such Customer believes that such coin has been over-graded by ICG.
