A quarter dollar coin, commonly known as a quarter, is a United States coin worth 25 cents, which is one-fourth of a dollar.

While most quarters in circulation are worth their face value of 25 cents, some can be worth significantly more to collectors, particularly those made of silver or with rare errors.

  • Silver Content: Quarters minted before 1965 contained 90% silver and are therefore worth more than their face value based on the current price of silver.
  • Errors: Certain quarters with mint errors, such as a doubled die or a missing mint mark, can be rare and highly sought after by collectors, fetching hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
  • Mintage: Quarters with low mintage numbers, meaning fewer were produced, tend to be rarer and therefore more valuable.
  • Condition: The condition of a quarter, ranging from circulated to uncirculated, also plays a significant role in its value.
  • 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter: These quarters, with a low mintage and unique design, can be worth anywhere from $1,000 to $40,000 or more depending on their condition.
  • 1932-D and 1932-S Washington Quarters: These are considered rare due to low mintages, with values potentially reaching tens of thousands of dollars for uncirculated specimens.
  • 1964-D Washington Quarter Double Die Obverse: This rare error variety can be worth hundreds of dollars in exceptional grades, and potentially much more for uncirculated specimens.
  • 1999-P Delaware State Quarter (“Spitting Horse” Error): This particular error, featuring a die gouge near the horse’s mouth, can be worth $20 to $50 in circulated condition and over $300 in uncirculated condition.
  • 2004-D Wisconsin Quarter (“Extra Leaf” varieties): These varieties with an extra leaf on the corn stalk have a value of $50-$85 in circulated condition.

In conclusion, while most quarters are worth 25 cents, some older or error-stricken quarters can be significantly more valuable to collectors. If you believe you may have a rare quarter, it’s recommended to consult a coin expert or refer to a coin pricing guide for an accurate valuation.

Thanks for asking. How much is a regular U.S. quarter worth? A regular U.S. quarter (issued from 1965 to the present) is worth its face value of 25 cents when used in commerce. These quarters are made primarily of copper and nickel.
