The value of a British halfpenny coin can vary significantly depending on several factors, including its age, condition, and any errors present.

Here’s a general overview:

  • Very common modern coins (1963-1967): These are generally worth very little, often less than 20p.
  • Older coins: Value increases with age and rarity. Some examples of halfpennies that can be worth more include:

– Richard II silver Halfpenny: Prices start around £70.
– First issue William and Mary Copper half penny: Valued at £240 at the time of writing.
– Halfpence with “H” mintmark (1874-1876 and 1881-1882): Indicates production at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham.

– 1936 Half Penny King George V British Britanna Brilliant Errored: Priced at $1000 on eBay.
– 1793 Liberty Cap Half Cents: Valued between $6,000 and $40,600 depending on condition.

  • Condition: Coins in better condition (e.g., uncirculated) are generally more valuable than those that are worn or damaged.
  • Rarity: The number of coins minted for a particular year and type can significantly impact its rarity and value.
  • Mint marks: Coins from certain mints can be more valuable than others.
  • Errors: Coins with minting errors, such as double strikes or fill errors, are highly sought after by collectors.

To accurately determine the value of a specific halfpenny coin, it’s best to consult with a reputable coin dealer or numismatist. Several online resources like Coinfully and CashforCoins LLC offer coin appraisal services. You can also find certified coin dealers through professional organizations.

From my experience, The Halfpenny of King George V is the most difficult bronze denomination to get, especially if you are trying to put a date set together. These early dates 1911-25 are the most difficult of the dates to find. Each coin is in selected circulated condition and remember that they are almost 100 years old.

Great question! What makes the 1923 Australian Half Penny so valuable? The 1923 halfpenny is one of Australia’s rarest pre-decimal coins due to its extremely limited mintage.
