In comparison to a Quarter, a Half Dollar has these characteristics:

  • Larger in Size: The Half Dollar has a diameter of 1.205 inches (30.61 millimeters), while a Quarter is 0.955 inches (24.26 millimeters) in diameter.
  • Heavier: The Half Dollar weighs 11.34 grams, which is twice the weight of a Quarter’s 5.67 grams.
  • Thicker: The Half Dollar is 0.085 inches (2.16 mm) thick, while the Quarter is 0.069 inches (1.75 mm) thick.
  • Less Common in Circulation: Although both are still legal tender and minted, Half Dollars are not as frequently encountered in everyday transactions as Quarters.
  • Composition: Both the Quarter and the Half Dollar, since 1965, are “clad” coins, meaning they have a pure copper core covered by layers of cupro-nickel (75% copper, 25% nickel).

Thanks for asking. The half-dollar coin, worth 50 cents, is twice the value of a quarter and weighs a bit more, too. At 1.2 inches in diameter, it’s the largest U.S. coin currently minted, with the quarter coming in at 0.955 inches in diameter.

I can help with that. The term “half dollar” refers to a half-unit of several currencies that are named “dollar”. One dollar ($1) is normally divided into subsidiary currency of 100 cents, so a half dollar is equal to 50 cents.
