Coin cell batteries are small, circular batteries commonly used in a variety of small electronic devices. Their names indicate their size and chemistry, typically following the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard.

Here’s a breakdown of the common coin cell sizes and their naming conventions

The name of a coin cell battery follows this general pattern: [Chemistry Prefix][Diameter in mm][Thickness in tenths of mm].

  • Chemistry Prefix:

– CR: Lithium-manganese dioxide (Li-MnO2) battery, 3V nominal voltage.
– BR: Poly carbon mono-fluoride lithium battery, used for extended reliability and safety, [according to a Quora answer].
– LR: Alkaline battery, 1.5V nominal voltage.
– SR: Silver oxide battery, 1.55V nominal voltage.

  • Diameter: The first two digits (or sometimes the first single digit for smaller batteries) indicate the battery’s diameter in millimeters.
  • Thickness: The last two digits (or sometimes the last single digit) indicate the battery’s thickness in tenths of a millimeter.

Here is a summary of some common coin cell battery types, including their size, voltage, capacity, and typical applications:

  • CR2032: 20mm diameter, 3.2mm thickness, 3V, 220-225mAh. Found in watches, calculators, computer motherboards, remote controls, and medical devices.
  • CR2025: 20mm diameter, 2.5mm thickness, 3V, 160-170mAh. Used in electronic games and small electronic devices.
  • CR2016: 20mm diameter, 1.6mm thickness, 3V, 90mAh. Common in watches, calculators, memory backup, and car key remotes.
  • LR44: 11.6mm diameter, 5.4mm thickness, 1.5V, 70mAh. Used in toys and small electronic devices.
  • LR41: 7.9mm diameter, 3.6mm thickness, 1.5V, 35mAh. Found in medical devices and electronic toys.
  • CR1620: 16mm diameter, 2.0mm thickness, 3V, 68-75mAh. Used in car remote keys and small electronic gadgets.
  • CR1220: 12.5mm diameter, 2.0mm thickness, 3V, 48mAh. Often used for memory backup and in small electronic devices.

While the numbers generally indicate size, minor variations can occur. Always check the battery’s datasheet for precise details.

Important Safety Note: Coin cells, especially 20mm or larger, are dangerous if swallowed, particularly by children, and can cause serious internal burns or death. Keep them out of reach of children.

Good point! The difference between C and D size batteries is mainly their physical size and power capacity. D batteries are larger and store more power, making them good for devices that use a lot of power. C batteries are smaller and are used for devices that need medium power.
