The design on the back (reverse) of a quarter coin has changed multiple times throughout history.
Currently, as part of the American Women Quarters™ Program (2022-2025), the reverse of the quarter features a variety of designs honoring notable women in American history.
- A heraldic eagle: This was the design used for many years, from 1932 to 1998.
- State-specific designs: The 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008) honored each state with a unique design on the reverse.
- National Park and historic site designs: The America the Beautiful Quarters Program (2010-2021) showcased national parks and monuments.
- Specific events or figures: Special commemorative quarters have been released, like the Bicentennial Quarter in 1976 featuring a colonial drummer, or the 2021 quarter depicting Washington crossing the Delaware.
- American women: The current American Women Quarters Program features a new woman each year from 2022 to 2025. Examples include Maya Angelou, Sally Ride, and Wilma Mankiller.
Therefore, to know exactly who or what is on the back of a quarter, it is important to know the specific year the coin was minted.
