The reverse side (back or “tails”) of a quarter coin has changed frequently over the years, especially since 1999.
Currently, as part of the American Women Quarters Program (which runs from 2022 to 2025), the reverse of the quarter features designs honoring the accomplishments and contributions made by women in American history . In 2025, five notable women are honored: Ida B. Wells, Juliette Gordon Low, Dr. Vera Rubin, Stacey Park Milbern , and Althea Gibson.
Before the current program, the reverse side of the quarter featured designs from several different initiatives. These included:
- The 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008), which celebrated each state’s heritage.
- The District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters Program (2009), honoring various territories.
- The America the Beautiful Quarters Program (2010-2021), showcasing national parks and sites.
- A special design in 2021 depicting Washington Crossing the Delaware.
Prior to these programs, from 1932 to 1998, the reverse typically featured an eagle design, with a temporary Bicentennial design in 1975 and 1976. The obverse side (front or “heads”) of the quarter has consistently featured the profile of George Washington.
