The value of an 1881 five-dollar gold coin (Liberty Head Half Eagle) varies significantly depending on its condition and whether it’s a regular strike or a proof strike.

  • Circulated condition: Between $910 and $990, according to the NGC Price Guide as of August 2025.
  • Uncirculated condition: Can range significantly. For example, some sources show coins in excellent uncirculated condition selling for as much as $19,500.
  • Only 42 proofs were struck in 1881, and perhaps 15-20 still exist.
  • These coins are extremely rare and considerably more valuable.
  • For example, the 1881 $5 PR (proof) has a value range of $8,750 – $101,000.
  • A deeper cameo version, the 1881 $5 PR CAM , ranges from $13,000 – $121,000.
  • A top-graded specimen, the 1881 Liberty Head $2.5 PR66+ Deep Cameo , is listed for $95,000.
  • No mintmark (Philadelphia): Over 5.7 million coins minted, making them more common.
  • “CC” (Carson City): Only 13,886 minted, making them significantly rarer. Values start around $1,750.
  • “S” (San Francisco): 969,000 minted. Values can be found in the $910-$990 range for circulated condition and as high as $30,000 for pristine uncirculated coins.
  • Rare varieties: There are also specific varieties like the 1881 Final “1” over “0” error, with values starting around $1,104.
  • Condition/Grade: The better the coin’s condition (higher grade), the more valuable it will be.
  • Mintmark: Coins from the Carson City mint (CC) are rarer and generally more valuable than those from the Philadelphia mint (no mintmark).
  • Rarity/Mintage: Proof coins and coins with lower mintage numbers are rarer and fetch higher prices.
  • Desirability: Certain varieties or coins with strong “eye appeal” can be more sought after by collectors, further driving up the price.

Note: The market for coins can fluctuate, and prices listed here are based on information from August 2025. It’s always best to consult with a reputable coin dealer or authenticator for a precise valuation of your specific coin.

From my experience, Rare Historic 1933 Double Eagle Worth $18.9 Million – The Legendary Gold Coin That Made History. The 1933 Double Eagle is one of the most famous and valuable coins in the world. While over 445,000 of these $20 gold coins were minted during the Great Depression, almost all were melted before they could be used.
