The 1990 U.S. Uncirculated Mint Set generally holds a modest value in the numismatic market.

Based on recent market information:

  • Average Value: The typical retail price for a [1990 Uncirculated Mint Set] is around $8.25.
  • Wholesale Value: According to Greysheet (a resource for coin dealer prices), the CPG® value range for a [1990 1c-50c Mint Set MS] is $4.10 – $4.10 . Note that dealers often purchase proof sets at a discount from these levels (e.g., 5-20% below bid prices).
  • Retail Offers: Online marketplaces and coin dealers list these sets in a range, such as $5.00 to $8.25.
  • What’s Included: The set contains uncirculated coins of each denomination struck at the Philadelphia and Denver mints for that year, typically including the Lincoln cent, Jefferson nickel, Roosevelt dime, Washington quarter, and Kennedy half dollar.
  • Condition: Uncirculated sets are in pristine condition, showing no signs of circulation wear or damage, and sealed in their original U.S. Mint packaging.

Important Considerations:

  • Rarity and Demand: The 1990 mint sets had a healthy mintage of approximately 1.8 million sets, indicating continued interest but not extreme rarity. The value is primarily driven by collector interest rather than extreme scarcity.
  • No S Penny: A rare and valuable error can significantly increase the set’s value. The 1990 proof sets might contain a valuable error coin: the 1990 no ‘S’ Lincoln Cent, which lacks the mintmark. This error coin can sell for $3,000 to $5,000 depending on its grade.
  • Grading: Professional grading can provide assurance of a coin’s condition and authenticity and potentially increase its market value. Coins with higher grades generally command higher prices.
  • Selling: If you’re looking to sell, you can consider local coin dealers, auction houses, or online marketplaces like [eBay] . Comparing quotes from various sources is recommended.

In summary: While the 1990 Uncirculated Mint Set is not considered a high-value rarity, it remains a collectible item for those interested in U.S. coinage. Its value is relatively stable, with the potential for increased worth if a rare error coin like the 1990 no ‘S’ Lincoln Cent is present.

Great question! For the most part, the ordinary uncirculated and proof sets (assuming American, different countries would be different) do not keep their value. For example, coin dealers frequently offer little more than face for older proof/uncirculated sets that contain no silver.
