When looking at the value of a 2001 Liberty Dollar coin, it’s important to understand the different types that fall under this category. Here’s a breakdown:

  • 2001-P Sacagawea Dollar (Philadelphia Mint): Over 62 million of these coins were minted. [According to Numiis] , they do not contain significant precious metals and were intended for everyday transactions. Their value depends on their grade. A Mint State 66 coin sold for $13, while a Mint State 69 coin sold for over $3,000. You can find these coins for sale on platforms like eBay, where a 2001-P Sacagawea dollar might be listed around $500.
  • 2001-D Sacagawea Dollar (Denver Mint): Over 70 million of these were minted. While usually not particularly valuable, there is a rare variety with the reverse of a South Carolina state quarter, though only a couple examples have been found. Offers on platforms like eBay range from $900 for a used coin to $1700 for a coin described as a beautiful addition to any collection.
  • Proof Sacagawea Dollar (San Francisco Mint – “S” mintmark): These are considered more valuable than regular strikes. A Proof 70 deep cameo coin sold for over $2,000, while a Proof 68 deep cameo sold for $35.
  • 2001 American Silver Eagle ($1 Bullion Coin): These coins contain one ounce of pure silver. They typically sell for around $2 above or below the current spot price of an ounce of silver. Mintage in 2001 was 9.001 million [according to JM Bullion] . On eBay, you can find them for sale around $50. Money Metals Exchange lists the price per coin at $59.66 for quantities between 1 and 39.
  • 2001-W American Silver Eagle ($1 Proof Coin): These proof specimens feature a “W” mint mark and were minted at the West Point Mint. Proof coins are considered more valuable than regular strikes. In 2001, 746,398 proof coins were minted.
  • It’s important to be aware of the “Liberty Dollar,” which is a private currency that was determined to be illegal as circulating money. These may have “Liberty,” “Dollars,” “Trust in God” and “USA” inscribed. They can resemble U.S. coins, but they are not legal tender. In 2007, the FBI raided the Liberty Dollar company and seized the coins and other assets. The creator, Bernard von NotHaus, was convicted of several crimes.

In summary: The value of a 2001 Liberty Dollar coin depends on whether it’s a Sacagawea dollar, an American Silver Eagle, or the private Liberty Dollar currency, as well as its condition, mintmark (P, D, or S for Sacagawea or W for Silver Eagles), and any special varieties. If you have a Sacagawea dollar or a Silver Eagle, you can check online marketplaces like eBay or consult with a coin dealer or appraiser for a valuation. If you have a private Liberty Dollar, its value is mainly in its silver content and its legal status as currency is questionable.

Thanks for asking. The 2001 Centenary of Federation coin with a rotation error can be worth between $50 and $100. The rotation error means that if you flip the coin and the Queen’s head is not upright, “you found something special”.

All 2001 ASE coins consist of one ounce of pure silver. Because of that silver content, each regular issue 2001 $1 silver coin usually sells for around $2 above or below the current price of an ounce of silver depending on if you are buying or selling.
