The value of a 1971-D Eisenhower dollar can vary depending on its condition and any errors it may have . The “D” mint mark signifies that the coin was minted in Denver.

  • Condition/Grade: Coins are graded on a scale from Poor (P-1) to Perfect Mint State (MS-70). Generally, coins in better condition with minimal wear or damage are more valuable.
  • Errors/Varieties: Errors like the “Peg Leg” error or off-center strikes can significantly increase the value of a 1971-D Eisenhower dollar.
  • Metal Content: While most 1971-D Eisenhower dollars are copper-nickel clad, some rare issues may be composed of silver or have errors in their metal content which can affect value.
  • Circulated Condition: According to the NGC Price Guide, as of August 2025, a 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar in circulated condition is worth between $1.05 and $1.50.
  • Uncirculated Condition: In pristine, uncirculated condition, some 1971-D Eisenhower dollars can sell for as much as $2350.
  • Errors/Varieties: Error coins can fetch significantly higher prices. For example, a 1971-D Eisenhower dollar with the “Peg Leg” error and a slight off-center strike was offered on eBay for $13,500. Another listing mentions a 1971-D Eisenhower Dollar with multiple errors (off-center strikes and a misprint) for $550. A 1971-D Eisenhower dollar with a double struck, 20% off-center error was listed for $15,749.99.
  • Silver Eisenhower Dollars: While most circulated 1971-D Eisenhower dollars are clad, some rare versions may be silver. These can have a higher value based on the melt value of the silver content, in addition to their numismatic value. The melt value of silver as of August 13, 2025 is $12.20.

Note: It’s important to remember that these are just estimations. The actual value of your 1971-D Eisenhower dollar may vary depending on the specific coin, its condition, and the current market demand. If you have a potentially valuable 1971-D Eisenhower dollar, it’s recommended to consult with a professional coin dealer or appraiser for a more accurate valuation.

Good point! 1971 S Proof Silver Dollar, Obverse Double Struck
A planchet may occasionally be struck by the same die more than once. Additionally, if it moves in between hits, the image will appear again. One 1971 silver dollar that was struck twice by the obverse die had that exact same outcome.

Look for mistakes in the strike, colors that seem off, and anything else out of the ordinary. Condition – In rough circulated condition, Eisenhower dollars aren’t worth as much. However, if the dollar doesn’t look like it’s seen real use, it could be worth a lot more.

From my experience, Look for a Silver or Copper Stripe
You can also check the edge of the coin for a silver stripe. If you find one, you most likely have a 40% silver, or silver clad Eisenhower dollar.
