The value of a 1907 five-cent coin, also known as a Liberty Head V Nickel, varies significantly based on its condition. In general:

  • Circulated coins: In circulated conditions, such as “Good” (G-4), a 1907 Liberty Head Nickel can be worth around $2-$3. As the condition improves to “Fine” (F-12) or “Extremely Fine” (EF-40), the value increases to $4-$6 and $15-$25, respectively.
  • Uncirculated coins: Coins in pristine, uncirculated condition, also known as Mint State (MS), are considerably more valuable. A 1907 Liberty Head Nickel in MS-60 condition can fetch $85-$100, while an MS-65 graded coin can reach values of $450-$600. Notably, a 1907 Liberty Head Nickel in MS-67 condition has an auction record of up to $19,975.
  • Proof coins: Proof versions of the 1907 Liberty Head Nickel, which were specially struck for collectors and have a lower mintage, are also highly valued. A Proof (PR-60) coin could be worth $190-$240, while a PR-65 graded coin may be valued at $600-$900. The auction record for a 1907 Proof V Nickel in PR67+CAM condition is $26,400.
  • Condition (Grade): This is the most crucial factor. Higher grades (meaning less wear and tear) correspond to higher values.
  • Mintage: While the regular strike 1907 V Nickel had a high mintage (over 39 million), it’s not necessarily more common in high grades than other dates. Proof versions had a very low mintage (1,475), contributing to their higher value.
  • Strike Quality: Well-struck coins with sharp details are generally more valuable.
  • Luster and Eye Appeal: Coins with original mint luster and appealing surfaces without significant blemishes or discoloration are more desirable.

Important Note: The values provided are approximate and can fluctuate based on market trends and the specific characteristics of individual coins. Consulting with a professional coin grading service like NGC or PCGS can provide a more accurate assessment of a specific coin’s value. Although the 1907 Liberty Head Nickel has one of the highest mintages in the series, it isn’t any more common than other coins in the series. It is available in most grades up to about MS66, although Mint State 67 isn’t impossible to find, but will require careful searching.
