The value of an 1863 Indian Head penny can vary significantly depending on its condition (grade) and whether it has any errors or special features.

Here’s a general overview of the value based on different conditions:

  • Circulated Condition (Good to Extremely Fine):

– According to NGC, a circulated 1863 Indian Head penny is worth between $12.50 and $170.
– [JM Bullion] also states that a penny in “Good” condition is worth about $10, and in “Extremely Fine” condition, it can be worth $50.

  • Uncirculated Condition:

– A pristine, uncirculated 1863 penny can be worth up to $12,500.
– [PriceCharting] lists a range of values for different levels of uncirculated coins:
– MS62: $238.50
– MS64: $492.00
– MS66: $3,799.14

  • Proof Coins:

– 460 proof 1863 pennies were minted, and these are valued at around $3,100.

Factors that can increase value:

  • Higher Grade: Coins in better condition (less wear and tear) are more valuable.
  • Errors: For example, a “split planchet” error could significantly increase the value, even on a lower-grade coin.
  • Special Features: The “Slender 3” variety, where the number 3 in the date is thin and elongated, is particularly rare and one sold for $19,000 in 2009.

Note: The 1863 Indian Head penny was made with a copper-nickel alloy, giving it a whiter appearance than the later bronze pennies. It’s also the most common of the copper-nickel Indian Head pennies, which contributes to lower prices for lower-grade examples.

An Indian Head Penny’s worth depends on its age and appearance. The better its condition, the greater the price. A rare Indian Head Penny that’s uncirculated is worth more than a circulated one with prominent wear marks.
