The value of an 1856 one-cent coin depends on whether it is a Braided Hair Large Cent or a Flying Eagle Cent.

  • Value Range: The Greysheet Catalog of Braided Hair Large Cents (1839–1857) lists the 1856 Braided Hair Large Cent with CPG® values ranging from $15.00 to $11,500.
  • Factors Affecting Value: The value of an 1856 Braided Hair Large Cent is heavily influenced by its condition and any specific die varieties. Examples of die varieties include “Upright 5” and “Slanted 5”, [according to PCGS] . Different varieties can have different values, even within the same grade.
  • Value Range: The Greysheet Catalog of Flying Eagle Cents (1856–1858) lists the 1856 Flying Eagle Cent with CPG® values ranging from $7,000 to $273,500. This variation depends on the condition of the coin.
  • Factors Affecting Value: The 1856 Flying Eagle Cent is considered a pattern coin rather than a circulation coin, as it was minted to propose a new cent design. Its limited mintage (approximately 2,000 – 3,000 pieces) makes it a key date and accounts for its high value, especially in higher grades.
  • To determine the exact value of your 1856 one-cent coin, it’s crucial to identify which type it is (Braided Hair Large Cent or Flying Eagle Cent).
  • The condition of the coin plays a significant role in its value, with higher grades generally fetching higher prices.
  • For accurate evaluation, it’s advisable to have the coin assessed by a professional numismatist or utilize online resources that provide detailed grading information and price guides.

Disclaimer: Coin values are subject to market fluctuations and depend on various factors. The values provided are based on the latest available information and should be considered as estimates. Consulting with a professional coin dealer or grader is recommended for a precise valuation of your specific coin.

What does a 1856 Flying Eagle penny look like?

The obverse features an eagle in flight and the reverse features an agricultural wreath of corn, wheat, cotton and tobacco. The Flying Eagle was minted only through 1858 due to insufficient metal flow. All Flying Eagle Cents are beautiful addition to any collection, however, the 1856 is the key date for the series.
