Several listings for “1789 George Washington” coins appear on platforms like eBay and Poshmark, with prices ranging significantly . However, it’s crucial to understand the context of such listings.

Here’s a breakdown of the typical value of coins associated with George Washington and the year 1789:

  • Face Value: The most common “1789 George Washington” coins are likely the Presidential Dollar series, minted in 2007.
  • Value: While these coins bear the years of Washington’s presidency (1789-1797), they were actually issued in 2007 as part of a commemorative series.
  • Circulated: These coins typically hold their face value of $1.
  • Uncirculated: Uncirculated coins might fetch a slight premium, potentially a few dollars above face value.
  • Errors: A notable exception are the 2007 Presidential Dollars with missing edge lettering, which can be worth $20 to over $100.
  • There’s also a listing for a “1789 George Washington Medal Coin/Token” described as brass and commemorative.
  • Value: This medal/token is listed on eBay for $225.
  • Some listings also appear for “George Washington” coins and collectibles from the 18th century that may not be US currency, potentially with significantly different values.
  • There’s a listing for a “George Washington One Dollar” coin made of gold, listed at $10,000.
  • Another listing refers to a “Super Rare George Washington Dollar Coin 1789-1797 One Of The Kind!” priced at $240.

Important note: It’s critical to be cautious when evaluating potentially old or commemorative coins. The actual value of any coin depends heavily on its condition, rarity, and any potential errors in minting . For accurate valuations of potentially valuable coins, consulting with a professional coin appraiser or numismatic expert is highly recommended.

      Good point! Missing Edge Lettering
You will recall that the first step strikes the obverse and reverse designs of the coin and the second stage produces the edge lettering. The error is most commonly found on George Washington Presidential Dollars. An estimated 100,000 to 200,000 were released into circulation.
