The value of a 100 francs coin depends on the country it originated from, its composition, and its condition.

  • France: The French franc, including the 100 franc coins, ceased to be legal tender in 2002 after the adoption of the Euro. A 100 French Francs coin, specifically one from 1998, had a melt value of $16.49 as of August 6, 2025, according to [NGC] . Historically, according to data from [Wise] in 2018, 100 French francs were equivalent to 16.16 US dollars.
  • Switzerland: Switzerland still uses the Swiss franc (CHF) as its official currency. As of August 14, 2025, 100 Swiss francs are worth approximately 123.71-123.85 US dollars.
  • Western African States: These countries use the West African CFA franc (XOF). A 100 CFA francs coin is worth $0.18 USD as of January 1, 2024. [Banknote World] shows a 2021 West African States 100 Francs coin selling for $2.87 USD each.
  • Other African Countries: Several other African countries that were formerly French colonies also use the franc, such as Guinea, Rwanda , and Comoros . The specific value of a 100 francs coin from these countries would depend on the country of origin and the exchange rate of their currency to the US dollar.
  • French Territories: French Polynesia, New Caledonia , and Wallis and Futuna use the CFP franc (XPF), which also has a fixed exchange rate to the euro . 100 CFP francs is worth 109.298 XPF as of January 1, 2024.
  • Rarity: Coins with limited mintage or unique historical significance often have a higher value.
  • Condition: Coins in better condition (well-preserved with minimal wear) are more desirable and valuable to collectors.
  • Demand: The popularity and interest among collectors for specific coins can fluctuate and influence their market price.
  • Historical Significance: Coins tied to important events or eras tend to fetch higher prices.
  • Metal Content: Coins made of precious metals like gold or silver have an intrinsic value based on the melt value of the metal. The 100 French Francs gold coin contains 29.03g of pure gold, and its value is directly linked to the global price of gold. As of August 12, 2025, a 100 Francs KM 786.1 coin from France (1855-1859) has a melt value of $3,127.54.

It’s important to remember that currency exchange rates fluctuate constantly. Therefore, the exact value of a 100 francs coin in US dollars can change over time.

They are part of the West African CFA franc coins series. The Central Bank of West African States started issuing these 100 CFA franc West Africa coins in 1967. They are currently still in circulation.

From my experience, French 100 franc Angels are among the most impressive and desirable of all large European gold coins minted pre-1933. Their magnificent “Guardian Angel” design really pops from the surface of this huge, hefty issue, which is five times the weight of the extremely popular 20 franc Angel.
