The coin you are likely referring to is the 2011 Native American $1 Coin which commemorates the 1621 Wampanoag Treaty . This is often called the “Sacagawea 1621 Wampanoag Treaty” coin.

Here’s some information about it

  • Year of Minting: While it features “1621 Wampanoag Treaty” on the reverse, indicating the year of the historical event, the coin itself was minted in 2011.
  • Obverse Design: The coin features the traditional Sacagawea design on the obverse (front), including her and her infant son, Jean Baptiste.
  • Reverse Design: The reverse showcases the Wampanoag Treaty, depicting the hands of Supreme Sachem Ousamequin Massasoit and Governor John Carver exchanging a peace pipe, symbolizing the first formal written peace alliance between the Wampanoag tribe and the European settlers.
  • No Date on Front: The date (2011) and mint mark are incused on the edge of the coin , along with the motto “E Pluribus Unum”. This might lead to the impression that it has “no date on the front” if only the obverse is examined.
  • Value: If you find this coin in your change, it’s worth its face value ($1). However, some coins, especially those with minting errors like missing or weak edge lettering , can be more valuable to collectors. [eBay] describes a circulated Sacagawea dollar featuring the Wampanoag Treaty with no inscription on the edge, making it rare. There are also variations in grading (e.g., MS62, MS64, MS66), with higher grades often correlating with higher values.

In essence, if you have a Sacagawea dollar coin with “Wampanoag Treaty 1621” on the reverse and no date on the front, it’s likely a 2011 issue where the date is located on the edge. Its value depends on its condition and whether it has any minting errors.

After 8 years of the Sacagawea Dollars, the United States Mint began to try new designs. Thus, came the Native American Dollar Coins. One thing that you can note about the new designs is that there is no longer a date or a mint mark visible on the dollar. Instead, the date and mint mark appear on the edge.

Good point! The 2011 Wampanoag Treaty Native American Dollar that was produced in Philadelphia had an error on some coins. Some coins were struck without the side lettering. Keep an eye out for Denver coins that may have this same issue. The official mintage is over 48,000,000, making this coin very easy to find.

Are coins without dates worth anything?

A coin collector must know the date to determine the rarity and value of the nickel. For example, undated buffalo nickels are worth about $0.06 each, but only because people use them for jewelry, shirt buttons, and other uses. All other types of nickels without dates are pretty much only worth face value.
