In the context of coin collecting and grading, “MS” stands for Mint State.

  • Uncirculated condition: Coins graded MS have never been in circulation, meaning they haven’t been used as currency in daily transactions.
  • Original condition: They are in a similar condition to how they were when they left the mint, free of wear and tear from handling and exposure.
  • Graded on a scale: Mint State coins are evaluated on a 70-point scale, specifically from MS-60 to MS-70.

The MS scale helps distinguish the condition of uncirculated coins. Here’s a breakdown of the key points on the scale, according to [PCGS] and [Heritage Auctions]:

  • MS-60 to MS-62 (Uncirculated): These coins show no wear but may have a noticeable amount of marks, a weak strike, or lack luster.
  • MS-63 (Select Uncirculated): Uncirculated with fewer imperfections and generally average eye appeal.
  • [MS-64] (Choice Uncirculated): Uncirculated with moderate distracting marks or deficiencies but generally average to above average eye appeal.
  • MS-65 to MS-66 (Gem Uncirculated): Coins in this range have only minor distracting marks or imperfections and are expected to retain full mint luster.
  • MS-67 to MS-69 (Superb Gem Uncirculated): These are very high-quality uncirculated coins with only the slightest distracting marks or imperfections.
  • MS-70 (Perfect Uncirculated): The highest possible grade, signifying a flawless coin with no imperfections, even under magnification.

Understanding MS coin grading is crucial for collectors, as the grade significantly impacts a coin’s value and desirability. Higher-grade MS coins are generally more sought after and valuable, particularly those reaching the coveted MS-70 mark.

From my experience, Choice Uncirculated (MS-63) – A coin with some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired. Uncirculated (MS-60) – A coin that has no trace of wear, but which may show a number of contact marks, and whose surface may be spotted or lack some luster.

Great question! This scale ranges from 1 to 70, with 70 being the highest possible grade, denoting a coin that is flawless under 5x magnification. Coins graded as MS70 are business-strike coins that are perfect as mint state, with no post-mint imperfections.
