The value of a 1940 Jefferson Nickel depends on several factors, including its condition (grade), the mint where it was produced (mint mark), and whether it exhibits any errors.

  • Mint mark: 1940 nickels were produced at three different mints:

– Philadelphia (No Mint Mark): These are the most common and have the lowest values. Circulated values typically range from $0.10 to $0.90, while higher-grade uncirculated coins can reach up to $100. An MS68 example sold for $558 in 2021.
– Denver (D Mint Mark): These are less common than Philadelphia issues and generally have slightly higher values, especially in higher grades. Circulated values are typically between $0.10 and $2, while uncirculated examples can be worth $3.50 to $125. An MS67 grade sold for $795 at auction.
– San Francisco (S Mint Mark): These are the least common of the business strikes and hold the highest values among the circulating issues. Circulated values range from $0.10 to $1.80, and uncirculated coins can fetch $7 to $175. Proof versions of the 1940-S nickel are significantly rarer, with only 14,158 minted. These can be worth $25 to $7,950, with a PF68 example selling for $18,400 in 2005.

  • Condition (Grade): Coins are graded on a scale from 1 to 70, with higher numbers indicating better preservation.

– Circulated: Heavily worn coins (Good to Fine grade) will have the lowest values.
– Uncirculated (Mint State): Coins that have never been used in circulation (MS-60 or higher) are more valuable. They retain their original luster and show no signs of wear.
– Full Steps (FS): This designation applies to uncirculated coins that exhibit at least five or ideally six distinct, continuous steps on the Monticello on the reverse. Full Steps coins are significantly rarer and command a higher premium. For example, a 1940-D Jefferson nickel with full steps graded at a mint state 64 sold for $25.

  • Errors: Certain errors can increase the value of a 1940 nickel.

– Repunched Mint Marks (RPM): A doubling effect on the mint mark due to being stamped more than once.
– Doubled Die: This results from the die being struck more than once at different angles during the manufacturing process, creating a doubled image.
– Die Cracks: Minor defects from the die that can add character to the coin.
– Other errors: Can include lamination errors, cud errors, and other minting mistakes.

In conclusion, a 1940 Jefferson Nickel could be worth anywhere from its face value of $0.05 to thousands of dollars depending on its condition, rarity, and whether it has any errors. A circulated coin with no mint mark will likely be worth close to its face value, while a high-grade, uncirculated coin with full steps or a rare error could be worth a considerable amount to a collector. If you have a 1940 nickel, it’s recommended to have it professionally graded to accurately determine its value.

Thanks for asking. The 1940 Wheat Penny value ranges from $4 to $11,000 depending on the coin condition, mintmark, and error involved. The 1940 wheat penny was struck at the facilities of Philadelphia (no mintmark), Denver (D), and San Francisco (S).
