The three parables of the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son (or prodigal son), found in Luke Chapter 15 of the Bible, are well-known and often taught together . They are a series of stories that Jesus told in response to the Pharisees’ and scribes’ criticism of him for associating with sinners and tax collectors. Each of these parables illustrate the importance of finding those who are lost (spiritually separated from God), the joy that attends their return to God, and God’s boundless love for all His children.

Here’s a breakdown of each parable and their meaning:

  • Story: A shepherd has 100 sheep, but one wanders away. He leaves the 99 and goes in search of the lost one. When he finds it, he rejoices and brings it home, calling his friends and neighbors to celebrate with him.
  • Meaning: This parable highlights that God actively seeks out those who are lost or have strayed from the path of righteousness. The lost sheep represents those who are sinners, and the shepherd’s joy upon finding it symbolizes the joy in heaven when a sinner repents.
  • Story: A woman has 10 silver coins, but loses one. She lights a lamp, diligently sweeps her house, and searches until she finds it. When she does, she calls her friends and neighbors to rejoice with her.
  • Meaning: Similar to the lost sheep, this parable reinforces the idea that God values every individual, no matter how lost they may seem. The lost coin represents a lost soul, [according to Learn Religions] . It emphasizes the importance of repentance and the great joy experienced in heaven when a sinner turns back to God.
  • Story: A man has two sons. The younger son demands his inheritance early, leaves home, and squanders his wealth on reckless living. When he becomes destitute, he decides to return home, hoping his father will take him back as a servant. To his surprise, his father welcomes him with open arms and throws a celebratory feast, notes ichristians.org. The older brother, who stayed and worked diligently, resents his father’s actions.
  • Meaning: This parable expands on the themes of repentance and forgiveness, illustrating God’s unconditional love and willingness to forgive even the most rebellious sinners. The younger son represents those who wander far from God, while the father represents God, who eagerly waits for and welcomes back those who repent. The older brother’s reaction highlights the danger of self-righteousness and missing the true spirit of God’s grace.

In conclusion, these parables together teach that God actively seeks out those who are lost, rejoices when they repent, and offers boundless love and forgiveness to all who turn back to Him. They emphasize the importance of repentance, the worth of each individual soul, and the joy that accompanies reconciliation with God.

McKay suggested that the three parables represent different ways of getting lost: the sheep stands for those who wander from the fold unwittingly; the coin, for those who are lost through the carelessness or neglect of leaders; and the son, for those who rebel.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep challenges the Pharisees judgemental attitude towards those who go astray. Jesus equates the joy of the woman who found the lost coin to God’s rejoicing over a sinner who repents. In this parable it is a son who is lost, and by the middle of the parable, he is found again just like the sheep and the coin. Like the shepherd and the woman, the father throws a great celebration—“My son who was dead is alive again. My son who was lost is found,” he cries.

So in this parable. Jesus told a story about a man who had 100 sheep but one of his sheep got lost just like the woman that had 10 coins. But lost one what would you do if you were in this. Situation.
