The value of a 2000 Sacagawea dollar coin can range depending on factors like its condition, mint mark, and presence of errors.

Here’s a breakdown of the value:

  • Standard Circulation Strikes (2000-P and 2000-D): Most 2000 Sacagawea dollars in circulated condition are worth face value ($1). However, coins in higher uncirculated grades (MS60-MS65) can be valued from $10 to $30.
  • Rare Varieties & Errors: Some 2000 Sacagawea dollars are considerably more valuable due to unique features or minting errors:

– Cheerios Dollar (2000-P): These coins were part of a promotion in Cheerios cereal boxes and feature enhanced detail on the eagle’s tail feathers. They are highly sought after by collectors and can be worth $5,000 to $25,000 or more in high grades (MS65+).
– Goodacre Presentation Coins (2000-D): These were specially struck coins given to the designer, Glenna Goodacre, and are highly valued in high grades (MS65+), ranging from $400 to $3,000+.
– Wounded Eagle (2000-P): This error features a die gouge on the eagle’s breast. Coins with this error in high grades (MS60-MS65) can sell for $250 to $5,000 or more.
– Mule Errors: These are extremely rare errors where a Sacagawea dollar was mistakenly struck with the obverse (heads) design of a Washington quarter. Only 18 such coins are known to exist, [according to Hero Bullion] . One of these coins sold for $144,000 at auction.
– Off-Center Strike Errors: These coins have a misaligned design due to incorrect placement during striking. The value depends on the extent of the error.

The 2000-D Sacagawea coin is rare primarily because of its production error. This occurred when a Sacagawea dollar was mistakenly struck with the reverse design of a South Carolina quarter. The result is an extremely rare and valuable coin due to the unusual combination of designs.

Dollars not the state quarter. Design you also want to look for the P mint mark on the obverse of the coin denoting its minting at the Philadelphia.
