The US quarter coin features a portrait of George Washington, the first president of the United States, on the obverse side (heads). This design has been in use since 1932, [according to the U.S. Mint Coin Classroom].
However, the reverse side (tails) of the quarter has undergone many changes over the years. Since 2022, the US Mint has been issuing the American Women Quarters™ Program, a four-year program that will continue until 2025.
Each year of this program (2022-2025) features up to five different reverse designs honoring the accomplishments and contributions of prominent American women. Some of the women honored in the program include:
- 2022: Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren , and Anna May Wong.
- 2023: Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanakaʻole, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idar , and Maria Tallchief.
- 2024: Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray, Patsy Takemoto Mink, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Celia Cruz , and Zitkala-Ša.
- 2025: Ida B. Wells, Juliette Gordon Low, Dr. Vera Rubin, Stacey Park Milbern , and Althea Gibson.
Therefore, while George Washington remains on the front of the quarter, the back can feature a diverse group of American women, depending on the year of issue.
