In coin collecting, “cameo” refers to a visual effect on a coin’s surface, particularly on proof coins , where there is a strong contrast between the frosted (matte) design elements (relief/devices) and the mirror-like (polished) background (field).

Here’s a breakdown of what that means:

  • Proof Coins: Cameo is most commonly seen on proof coins, which are specially struck for collectors and are typically produced with higher quality and sharper detail than regular circulation coins.
  • Frosted Devices: The raised elements of the coin’s design (e.g., portraits, lettering) are intentionally given a frosted, matte finish.
  • Mirror-like Fields: The flat, background areas of the coin are polished to a brilliant, reflective, mirror-like finish.
  • The Contrast: This combination creates a striking visual contrast, making the design elements stand out boldly against the reflective background, [according to Wikipedia].

Grading services like PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) use terms to describe the extent of this cameo effect:

  • Cameo (CAM): Indicates a light to moderate frosting on both sides of the coin’s devices, [says APMEX].
  • Deep Cameo (DCAM) / Ultra Cameo (UCAM): These terms are used interchangeably by PCGS and NGC, respectively, to describe a more pronounced and intense frosting on the devices and a stronger, deeper mirror-like finish on the fields.

The rarity and value of a coin can be significantly increased by the presence and intensity of a cameo effect.

Great question! The cameo effect is highly sought after by collectors as it enhances the visual appeal of the coin and indicates a high-quality minting. Essentially, “cameo” in coin grading describes a visual quality that enhances the beauty and value of a proof coin.

How to tell if a coin is deep cameo?

To receive a “Deep Cameo” (or “Ultra Cameo”) designation, a coin must exhibit strong and unbroken frosted devices on both the obverse and the reverse. A robust contrast between the mirrored fields and frosted devices must be consistent and undiminished in all areas.

Thanks for asking. Deep Cameo (DCAM)
Brilliant Proofs that show deep and even frosting on the devices can earn the Deep Cameo designation. Like the Cameo designation, the frosting and mirror like finish must be on both sides of the coin.

Thanks for asking. Ultra cameo means there’s a strong “frosted” look to a proof coin. “Proof” coins just refer to the way the coin is produced and not all of them are cameo or ultra cameo. More modern coins tend to have a more cameo look to them.
