The value of a 1976 half dollar coin depends on several factors, including its condition, mint mark, and whether it’s a silver or clad version.

  • Circulated: Face value ($0.50) to around $3.
  • Uncirculated: $5 – $20, with higher grades commanding more.
  • Errors: Certain errors can significantly increase the value, with some selling for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
  • Circulated: $0.50 to around $3.
  • Uncirculated: $4 – $10.
  • Errors: Similar to the Philadelphia mint, errors can increase the value considerably, [according to Coin ID Scanner].
  • Clad (copper-nickel): These were issued as proof coins.

– Proof: $1 – $3, but can be worth more in higher grades.

  • Silver (40% silver): These were also issued as proof coins and are more valuable due to their silver content.

– Circulated: $5.75 – $6.25.
– Uncirculated: $20 – $50 or more, with perfect grades (MS70) potentially reaching thousands.

  • Condition: Coins in better condition (less wear and tear) are generally more valuable.
  • Mint Mark: Coins from the San Francisco Mint with an “S” mint mark can be more valuable, especially those containing silver.
  • Silver Content: Some 1976 half dollars, particularly those from the San Francisco Mint, contain 40% silver, increasing their intrinsic value.
  • Errors: Coins with minting errors, such as doubled dies, off-center strikes, or missing clad layers, can be significantly more valuable to collectors.

In summary, a typical circulated 1976 half dollar (clad version) will only be worth its face value ($0.50) to a few dollars. However, uncirculated coins, especially silver versions, and error coins can be worth considerably more to collectors. If you have a 1976 half dollar, examining its mint mark and condition can help determine its potential value. You can find the mint mark on the obverse side of the coin, just beneath President Kennedy’s neck and above the dual date “1776-1976.” Coins without a mint mark were produced at the Philadelphia Mint.

From my experience, The 1976-S Silver Kennedy Half Dollar is in brilliant uncirculated condition and contains 40% silver. The 1976-S Kennedy is also the first one of its series to be minted at the San Francisco Mint and not be a proof.
