The year 2023 continued the American Women Quarters Program, featuring five quarters with reverse designs honoring notable women:
- Bessie Coleman: The first African American and Native American woman licensed pilot. The design shows her preparing for flight.
- Edith Kanakaʻole: An Indigenous Hawaiian composer and cultural figure. Her quarter design incorporates elements of the Hawaiian landscape.
- Eleanor Roosevelt: Former First Lady and advocate for human rights. Her design includes the scales of justice and a globe.
- Jovita Idar: A Mexican-American journalist, activist, teacher, and suffragist. Her portrait on the quarter includes inscriptions about her accomplishments.
- Maria Tallchief: America’s first prima ballerina. The coin depicts her in a ballet pose and includes her Osage name.
The front (obverse) of all 2023 quarters in this program features a portrait of George Washington by Laura Gardin Fraser. This design was originally created for the 1932 quarter. The inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “2023”.
While the face value is 25 cents, some 2023 quarters can be worth more, especially those with errors or in mint condition. Examples of potentially valuable error coins include a 2023-P Bessie Coleman with a die chip on the airplane wing, a 2023-P Edith Kanakaʻole with a clashed die error, a 2023-P Maria Tallchief with an extra feather, and a 2023-D Jovita Idar with a die crack. A 2023-D Washington quarter with errors on George’s nose and neck has also been reported as having a high value.
Uncirculated 2023 quarters may sell for $1 to $3. Proof sets and rolls are also available from sources like the [U.S. Mint] and coin dealers.
