The first US President depicted on a coin was George Washington.

Specifically, he appeared alongside General Lafayette (a French hero of the American Revolution) on the 1900 Lafayette Dollar commemorative coin.

However, it’s worth noting that the first US President to appear on a regular-issue circulating coin , meant for everyday transactions, was Abraham Lincoln on the penny in 1909.

Thanks for asking. The fictional Lady Liberty was the main symbol on U.S. coins at the time, but in 1909, Abraham Lincoln became the first U.S. president to appear on American money. Founding Fathers and other deceased presidents, including Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin, have since joined him.

Thanks for asking. In 1909, Abraham Lincoln became the first real person on a U.S. circulating coin. While the Lincoln portrait has remained the same since then, several different designs have been used on the reverse: Ears of wheat (1909 to 1958)

In January 1909, the Mint engaged Brenner to design a cent depicting the late president Abraham Lincoln, 1909 being the centennial year of his birth. It was the first widely circulating design of a U.S. president on a coin, an idea that had been seen as too monarchical in the past, namely by George Washington.

What president refused to have his portrait on the coin?

From my experience, Ironically Washington’s popularity ensured that the design would be kept, despite the fact that Washington refused to have his portrait used on early American coins!
