In coin grading, BU stands for Brilliant Uncirculated.

This means the coin:

  • Has never been in circulation.
  • Retains its original mint luster and detail.
  • Shows no signs of wear.

BU coins are prized by collectors and investors due to their pristine condition, visual appeal, and potential for increased value over time. They are generally considered to be in mint state and can be graded on the Sheldon Scale anywhere from MS-60 to MS-70.

Premium Pricing: Due to their superior condition, BU coins are generally priced higher than coins with wear or imperfections. Collectors and investors expect to pay a premium for coins that preserve their original mint luster and flawless appearance.

From my experience, NGC standards dictate that Brilliant Uncirculated coins are any coins graded between 60-70 on the Sheldon scale.

These two grades represent important distinctions that can significantly impact a coin’s value. AU (About Uncirculated) coins show light wear but retain a good amount of luster and detail. BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) coins exhibit no wear and have full, original mint luster.

Good point! Uncirculated (Unc.) or Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coins are those that show no signs of wear at all. These are generally assigned a higher grade known as Mint State (MS): Uncirculated (MS-60, 61, 62): Abrasions in the open fields of the coin. Marks or scuffs on the coin, particularly on the monarch’s portrait.
