The cost of having a coin graded by a professional service like PCGS or NGC can vary significantly depending on several factors, including:

  • The coin grading company used: PCGS and NGC are the two most recognized grading services, each with different pricing structures.
  • The coin’s category and value: More valuable and rarer coins require higher security and expertise, leading to higher grading fees.
  • The service speed requested: Expedited services with faster turnaround times will incur higher costs compared to standard or economy services.
  • The number of coins submitted at once: Submitting multiple coins can sometimes lead to discounts, but you’ll still have per-coin grading fees.
  • Additional services requested: Special labels, variety attribution, or conservation services will add to the overall cost.

Here’s a general overview of the potential costs, considering these factors:

  • Required for direct submission: Both PCGS and NGC require you to be a member to directly submit coins for grading.
  • Annual membership costs: NGC offers an Associate membership for $25 per year, while PCGS Silver membership starts at $69 annually. Higher tiers with more benefits are also available.
  • Economy: For coins valued at $300 or less, expect to pay around $22 with PCGS and $23 with NGC. These have the longest turnaround times.
  • Standard: For coins valued up to $2,500 (PCGS) or $3,000 (NGC), the cost is approximately $38 (PCGS) or $40 (NGC).
  • Express: For coins valued up to $10,000 (PCGS) or $10,000 (NGC), fees are around $65 (PCGS) or $80 (NGC). These offer faster turnaround times.
  • Higher value/Rarities: For very valuable coins, fees can be significantly higher, reaching hundreds of dollars or even including a percentage of the coin’s value for the highest value coins.
  • Both PCGS and NGC charge a flat handling fee per submission, typically $10.
  • Secure shipping is essential: Use registered mail or insured express services, never standard mail, especially for valuable coins.
  • Return shipping costs vary: Depending on the declared value and insurance needs, return shipping costs can range from $22-$150.

For a single coin valued under $300, a basic estimate for grading with PCGS might be around $123 (including a basic membership, grading fee, handling fee, and return shipping), although this will vary based on your specific situation. The total cost can quickly increase with higher coin values, expedited services, and additional requests.
