The value of a 1971 2 pence coin can vary depending on its condition and whether it’s a regular strike, a proof issue, or a rare error coin.

  • Condition: A coin in excellent condition with minimal wear will be more valuable than a heavily circulated one.
  • Errors: Coins with minting errors, such as double strikes, die skews, or those struck on the wrong blank, can be significantly more valuable.
  • Proof Issues: These are coins specially minted for collectors with a higher quality finish. A 1971 proof 2 pence coin in perfect condition can fetch a higher price.
  • Rarity: While 1971 2 pence coins are relatively common, certain rare varieties, like those with specific errors or limited proof issues, can be highly sought after.
  • Regular circulated coins: These are generally worth between $1 and $10.
  • Rare or uncirculated coins: You might find these listed on platforms like [Etsy for around $109.70] or [eBay for upwards of $2,120].
  • Error coins or rare proofs: These can command much higher prices, potentially reaching hundreds or even thousands of dollars. One such listing on [eBay, for instance, prices an error 1971 2p at $1,000] . Another listing for a rare, uncirculated 1971 2p on [Etsy is listed at $500].

Note: It’s important to be cautious of scams and verify the authenticity and true value of coins before purchasing, especially those listed at exceptionally high prices. Checking the sold items filter on eBay or consulting reputable auction sites and coin grading services like PCGS or NGC can provide a more accurate assessment of a coin’s market value.

    What makes a 1971 2p coin rare?

Great question! All 2p coins struck between 1971 and 1981 included the words ‘NEW PENCE’ as part of their reverse. In 1982 and in subsequent years the words ‘NEW PENCE’ were replaced with the word ‘TWO PENCE’. However, in 1983 a small number of 2p coins were mistakenly struck with the wording ‘NEW PENCE’ on the reverse.

In a few of those sets the 2p coin was struck with the older (‘New Pence’ type) reverse by mistake and is indeed very rare. The 1983 2p Coin with ‘New Pence’ on the reverse is the only rare coin, all of the others are very common and were struck in very high numbers.

This 2p coin from 1971 is a true rarity with a mint error that makes it extremely valuable. The coin features the words ‘New Pence’ which is unusual for a 1971 coin, adding to its uniqueness. It was minted in the United Kingdom and has a beautiful Bronze color.
