A dollar coin’s worth depends on various factors including its type, year of mintage, condition, and any errors present.

Here’s a breakdown

  • Older silver dollars (pre-1935): These are the most valuable and contain a significant amount of silver.
  • Even common dates of these coins are worth $35-$45 due to their silver content alone, with rarer dates potentially reaching hundreds or thousands of dollars.
  • Morgan and Peace dollars: These are the most well-known and sought-after among silver dollars, with collector demand significantly increasing their value.
  • Eisenhower, Susan B. Anthony, Sacagawea, and Presidential dollars: Most of these coins are worth only their face value of one dollar.
  • Collector versions or high-grade examples: These can fetch premiums, typically ranging from $4 to $12.
  • Coins with minting errors: These are particularly desirable and can be worth substantially more than their face value.
  • For example, some early Presidential dollar coins were missing the inscription “In God We Trust” on their edges, increasing their value considerably.
  • Certain dollar coins, like the 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar, are extremely rare and have sold for millions of dollars at auction.

In summary, while many modern one-dollar coins are only worth their face value, older silver dollar coins and those with specific errors or in exceptional condition can be quite valuable to collectors. If you have a dollar coin that you think might be rare or valuable, consider consulting a coin expert or researching similar coins online to determine its worth.

I can help with that. Examine the Coin’s Date
One of the easiest ways to tell if a coin is rare is to check the date. If the coin is from before 1800, it’s likely rare. Coins minted in the 19th century are also generally considered rare, with a few exceptions.

From my experience, According to the NGC Price Guide, as of August 2025, a Sacagawea Coin from 2000 in circulated condition is worth between $1.05 and $1.35. However, on the open market 2000 P Dollars in pristine, uncirculated condition sell for as much as $375.

Should I keep my $1 coins?

Thanks for asking. That said, most dollar coins are only worth face value anyway, so there’s really no reason to keep circulated ones. You can get proofs or MS copies all day long if you want a few to collect.
