The figure depicted on a 50-cent coin varies depending on the country of origin.

In the United States , the half-dollar coin features President John F. Kennedy on the obverse (front) and a representation of the Presidential Seal on the reverse (back).

However, the design on the U.S. half-dollar wasn’t always of a President.

  • For over 150 years, the obverse of the half dollar displayed various images of Lady Liberty, a female figure symbolizing liberty.
  • In 1948, the half dollar design changed to feature Benjamin Franklin on the obverse and the Liberty Bell on the reverse.

The Australian 50-cent coin (a dodecagonal or 12-sided coin) features the reigning monarch on the obverse. Since 1969, this has included Queen Elizabeth II and, starting in 2024, King Charles III. The reverse side depicts the Australian coat of arms.

Similarly, the Canadian 50-cent coin features the reigning monarch on the obverse, including Queen Elizabeth II and, more recently, King Charles III. The reverse displays the Canadian coat of arms.

The New Zealand 50-cent coin features Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and Captain Cook’s HMS Endeavour sailing near Mount Taranaki on the reverse. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, future coins are expected to feature King Charles III.

In conclusion, the specific individual or emblem found on a 50-cent coin depends on the issuing nation and the year of minting.

The Capped Bust half dollar is the third version of the half dollar produced by the US Mint. It features Lady Liberty on its obverse once again, but with a few subtle changes. The first new element is its namesake, the cap that Lady Liberty now wears on her head.

In 1964, the Mint switched the half dollar design to honor President John F. Kennedy who died the year before. He has been on the obverse ever since. The reverse has shown the Presidential Seal design except in 1975 and 1976.

The process begun in 1909 was complete in 1964, when American Presidents were featured on every regular issue circulating coin; Abraham Lincoln on the cent, Thomas Jefferson on the nickel, Franklin Roosevelt on the dime, George Washington on the quarter-dollar and John F. Kennedy on the half-dollar.
