The value of a farthing coin can range significantly, depending on several factors, including its age, rarity, condition, and any unique characteristics or errors.

In its time, the farthing was a low-denomination coin, worth one-quarter of a penny. However, for collectors today, its value can be much higher, with some rare examples fetching thousands of dollars or pounds.

Here are some examples of farthing values observed in recent markets:

  • A 1946 Great Britain Farthing Coin might be valued around $19 USD.
  • An 1886 Great Britain Farthing in outstanding condition sold for $46.99 USD.
  • A “Rare 1865 Farthing Coin” was listed for $32 USD.
  • An 1828 British Farthing in “higher grade” was sold for $45 USD (originally $60 USD, 25% discounted).
  • An 1896 Great Britain Farthing , graded as NGC MS 65 Red, was priced at $390 USD.
  • A Great Britain pattern Farthing from 1689, graded NGC VG8 BN, was listed for $175 USD.
  • Rare Farthings from the William III period (like a 1699 with unbarred ‘A’s) can be valued around $169.85 USD.
  • St. Patrick’s Farthing with a “Qviesat Error,” graded PCGS VG Details, was offered at $2,000 USD, which is noted as half the Redbook price for this variety.
  • Rare and unique Farthings can be worth anywhere between £200 and £2,000. Some rare examples, such as James II farthings (1685 & 1686), can sell upwards of £2,000 when highly graded. Farthings minted during the reign of William and Mary, particularly the 1690 and 1692 editions, are also considered extremely rare and can be worth over £3,000.

In determining the value of any farthing coin, you should consider the following factors:

  • Rarity and Mintage: Coins produced in limited numbers or with rare dates or mint marks are more valuable.
  • Condition and Grading: The better the coin’s condition (less wear, more luster), the higher its grade and thus its value.
  • Special Versions or Errors: Proof coins, uncirculated coins, commemoratives, or coins with minting errors or varieties can have a higher value.
  • Popularity: Certain coin series or designs are more sought after by collectors, which can increase their value.
  • Metal Content: While many Farthings are copper or bronze, any precious metal content (like silver) would impact the intrinsic value.

To accurately assess the value of a specific farthing coin, it is recommended to consult a reputable professional coin dealer or numismatist. They can help identify the coin’s specifics, assess its condition, research its rarity and market value, and provide an expert opinion.

Thanks for asking. How much is a farthing worth? In its time of circulation, the farthing coin was worth one-fourth of a penny and before decimalisation, there were 240 pennies to a pound. In today’s money, this would mean that a farthing would have a value of 0.10 pence.

Great question! There were 4 Farthing variations struck dated 1860. Mintage figures are shown where available. A mid grade condition 1860 Copper Farthing is worth about £5,375.00.
