There’s an urban legend circulating that finding a coin in your car door handle could be a sign of a car theft attempt or something more sinister.

The theory behind this particular claim is that thieves place a coin in the car door handle, usually on the passenger side, to prevent the car from locking properly when the driver attempts to use their remote locking device. The coin essentially jams the locking mechanism, leaving the door unlocked even if the driver thinks the car is secured. Thieves then wait for the owner to leave the car, at which point they can open the unlocked door and steal items or even the car itself.

However, many sources, including mechanics, dismiss this claim as an urban legend and say it’s implausible for a coin to deactivate a car’s locking system. Some mechanics and online sources suggest that the key fob locking mechanism would still be intact, and a coin wedged in the handle wouldn’t prevent the car from locking.

Despite this, some videos have been posted online seemingly demonstrating that certain car models can be affected by this tactic. It is important to note that these videos are not necessarily conclusive evidence of a widespread threat, and it may depend on the specific make and model of the vehicle.

  • Remove it: Carefully remove the coin from the door handle.
  • Check the lock: Attempt to lock and unlock your car doors manually and with the remote to ensure all doors are functioning properly.
  • Be vigilant: Pay close attention to your surroundings, especially in parking lots or other areas where this incident might occur.
  • Report suspicious activity: If you notice anything else suspicious or feel threatened, contact the police or parking security personnel immediately.

While the “coin in the car door handle” threat might be overblown, it’s always advisable to be aware of potential risks and take precautions to protect yourself and your vehicle.

Thanks for asking. A woman who shares a lot of travel tips has shared a genius idea that will help you in this regard. She suggests that whenever you stay in a hotel, you put a coin in the doorknob before you go to sleep. Since the coin remains static on the doorknob, the method can help you know if you are safe.

Hanging a sock on the (apartment or bedroom) door handle is a common sign used by room mates – especially in college – to warn each other that they have a date over.
