The value of a 2000 Sacagawea dollar coin varies greatly depending on its condition and whether it has any rare errors or special characteristics.

  • Circulated condition: Most circulated 2000 Sacagawea dollars are only worth their face value of $1.
  • Uncirculated condition: Uncirculated 2000-P (Philadelphia mint) and 2000-D (Denver mint) Sacagawea dollars, graded as MS60-MS65, can fetch between $10 and $30.

Some 2000 Sacagawea dollars, however, can be worth significantly more due to rare errors or special characteristics:

  • Cheerios Dollar: These rare 2000-P Sacagawea Dollars have a more detailed tail feather design on the eagle’s back. They were included in boxes of Cheerios as part of a promotional campaign when the coin was first released. About 60 to 70 of these are known to exist. Depending on their condition, these can range in value from $5,000 to $25,000 or more.
  • Goodacre Presentation Coins: These are 2000-D Sacagawea dollars specially prepared for Glenna Goodacre, the sculptor who designed the Sacagawea dollar’s obverse. Only 5,000 were minted. These can be worth $400 to $3,000 or more depending on their condition.
  • Wounded Eagle/Speared Eagle: This is a 2000-P error coin with a die flaw creating a raised line or lines resembling a spear across the eagle’s breast. These errors can increase the coin’s value, with prices ranging from $250 to $5,000 or more depending on the grade and condition of the coin.
  • Mule Errors: Mule errors occur when a die meant for one coin is mistakenly paired with a die from a different coin. A very rare example is the 2000 Sacagawea Dollar muled with a Washington Quarter obverse. Only a small number of these exist, and they can command very high prices, potentially exceeding $100,000.
  • Off-Center Strike Errors: These occur when a coin’s design is misaligned because the planchet was incorrectly placed during striking. The value is determined by the extent of the defect; more spectacular instances sell for higher amounts. Generally, these can fetch between $100 and $1,000 or more.

  • Most 2000 Sacagawea dollars are still worth only their face value of $1.
  • The “golden” color of Sacagawea dollars comes from their composition of copper, manganese, brass, zinc, and nickel, not from precious metals.
  • The value of any coin depends heavily on its condition, rarity, and collector demand.
  • If you believe you have a valuable 2000 Sacagawea dollar, especially an error variety, it is advisable to consult with a reputable coin dealer or professional grading service for an accurate assessment.

Why is a 2000 Sacagawea Coin so valuable?

The 2000-D Sacagawea coin is rare primarily because of its production error. This occurred when a Sacagawea dollar was mistakenly struck with the reverse design of a South Carolina quarter. The result is an extremely rare and valuable coin due to the unusual combination of designs.

Great question! This 2000-P Sacagawea $1 coin is not only a stunning example of U.S. minting but also a piece of numismatic history with a unique provenance. Certified by PCGS in SP67 condition, this coin was part of a special presentation made to Glenna Goodacre, the artist who designed the obverse of the Sacagawea dollar.
