An uncirculated coin is one that has never been used in transactions and shows no signs of wear. These coins are in mint condition , meaning they have been preserved in the state they were in when they were originally struck at the mint.

Here’s what defines an uncirculated coin:

  • No signs of wear: Uncirculated coins have not been subjected to the handling and exchange that causes wear and tear on coins used in everyday transactions.
  • Original mint luster: These coins retain the distinctive sheen or luster they possessed when they were first struck at the mint.
  • Sharp design details: Uncirculated coins maintain the sharp and crisp details of their design because they haven’t been worn down through use.
  • May have minor imperfections: It’s important to note that while uncirculated coins show no signs of circulation wear, they might have minor imperfections from the minting process itself, such as small contact marks from other coins in a bag, [according to The Spruce Crafts] . These imperfections are not the result of circulation but of the manufacturing and packaging process.
  • Grading: Uncirculated coins are graded on the Sheldon Scale from MS-60 to MS-70 (MS stands for Mint State). A higher number indicates a coin in better condition, with an MS-70 coin being considered perfect, free of any imperfections even under 5x magnification, [notes Global Coin].
  • Cartwheel Effect: When tilted under a light source, an uncirculated coin will display a “cartwheel effect” where light appears to dance across its surface.
  • Luster: The coin should have a bright, reflective surface, indicating the original mint luster.
  • Absence of Wear: The highest points of the coin’s design should be sharp and show no signs of rubbing or wear.
  • Professional Grading: The most reliable way to confirm a coin’s uncirculated status is to have it professionally graded by a reputable service like PCGS or NGC.

In essence, an uncirculated coin is prized by collectors and investors for its pristine condition, which preserves the original artistic and historical integrity of the coin.

Because Uncirculated coins represent greater quality and scarcity, they carry higher values. Uncirculated grades range from MS-60 Typical to MS-70 Perfect. Most Uncirculated coins range from MS-60 to MS-63+, as very few coins meet the technical standards for MS-65 or higher.

Circulated coins may be cheaper, but they are likely not in mint condition and have lost some value over time. Uncirculated coins are more valuable since they retain their original condition. While they cost more, their condition means they will likely retain or increase in value.
