The Kansas City Chiefs won the coin toss at Super Bowl LIX, correctly calling tails . As the visiting team, the Chiefs had the opportunity to make the call. They chose to defer to the second half, meaning the Eagles received the opening kickoff of the game.

The Chiefs ultimately lost the game against the Eagles by a score of 40-22. While the Chiefs had won the coin toss in the past two Super Bowls and also won the game, [according to Newsweek] , this year their coin toss win did not lead to a victory.

This was the 59th Super Bowl, and historically, the coin toss has landed on tails 30 times and heads 28 times. [According to Doc’s Sports] , the Chiefs winning the coin toss with tails is consistent with the general Super Bowl coin toss history.

Did the coin toss heads or tails in the Super Bowl 2025?

Since the Chiefs are technically the visiting team in this year’s Super Bowl, they called the toss between them and the Eagles and ended up winning after calling tails. Kansas City chose to defer to the second half, so the Eagles will get the ball first.

From my experience, The visiting team’s captain traditionally gets to call “heads” or “tails” as the referee flips the coin.

Great question! The party who calls the side that is facing up when the coin lands wins. The precedent necessity for win in the dual state flip has motivated methods for cheating so as to improve or ensure a win in an apparently random event.
