Collectors are often interested in 1953 Wheat pennies with various errors. These errors can significantly increase the coin’s value beyond its face value.

Here are some of the notable error varieties found on 1953 Wheat pennies:

  • Doubled Die Obverse (DDO): This error results in a doubled appearance of design elements on the front of the coin, like the date or lettering. A 1953 DDO penny can be valued between $50 and $200 in higher grades.
  • Repunched Mint Mark (RPM): This occurs when the mint mark is stamped more than once with slight misalignments. Examples include the 1953-S and 1953-D RPMs. The D mint mark is below the date, and you might see a protruding part or a spread. An AU50 1953-D/D Repunched Mintmark, FS-502, BN is valued between $11.00 and $85.00.
  • Off-Center Strike: This error happens when the coin blank is struck off-center, causing part of the design to be missing. Examples include a 1953 D with “wood grain” appearance valued at $75 and a 1953 S with errors on the rim.
  • Die Cracks and Cuds: A die crack is a raised line caused by a crack in the die, while a cud is a raised, blank area resulting from a broken piece of the die. A 1953-P with a die crack chip cud on the reverse has been noted.
  • Clipped Planchet: This error results in a missing portion of the coin blank, creating a crescent shape.
  • Filled In Errors: This occurs when recessed areas of the die, like the loop of the nine, fill with metal during striking. This is common in 1953-D pennies, where the nine might appear filled in. The value of these coins is around $1 to $2.
  • “Skeleton Lincoln” or “No Mouth/Jaw” Error: This rare variety features Lincoln’s portrait without a mouth or jaw and may have other errors. One is offered for $698.33.

The value of these error coins varies based on the type and severity of the error, as well as the coin’s condition. Higher grades and rarer errors are typically worth more. A 1953 D Wheat Penny with multiple errors is listed for $1000.

Good point! Depending on their condition, those 1943 Lincoln wheat pennies would be worth at most between $100,000 and $250,000, Feigenbaum told USA TODAY. But the likelihood of having a near-priceless penny is similar to “saying your lottery ticket might be worth $100,000.

“Only a few Lincoln cents dated 1909 to 1958 with the wheat stalks design on the back (“wheat pennies”) have sold for $1 million or more.”
