As of August 13, 2025, a 10 yen coin is worth approximately $0.07 USD.

The value of a 10 yen coin is determined by two main factors:

  1. Exchange rate: This is the primary determinant of the coin’s value when converting it to another currency. Exchange rates constantly fluctuate due to various economic factors.
  2. Numismatic value: For collectors, the value of a 10 yen coin can be higher than its face value due to factors such as:

– Rarity: Ten yen coins minted in 1989 with specific modifications in the appearance of the Byodoin Phoenix Hall are considered scarce and can fetch a significantly higher price.
– Condition: Coins in excellent condition (uncirculated) can also be more valuable to collectors.
– Date and mintmark: While most 10 yen coins are common, some specific dates or mintmarks might be more desirable for collectors.

Finding places to exchange foreign coins in the US can be challenging, as many banks and currency exchange services primarily deal with foreign banknotes. However, here are some options:

  • Specialized online services: Some websites, like [Leftover Currency] , specialize in exchanging leftover foreign coins for cash.
  • Currency exchange kiosks: You might find currency exchange kiosks at airports or shopping malls that might accept foreign coins, but their rates might be less favorable.
  • Collect them for future trips: If you anticipate future trips to Japan, you can save your 10 yen coins and use them then.

It’s generally more convenient and cost-effective to exchange your yen before returning from Japan or to utilize alternative methods for obtaining cash in Japan, such as using ATMs with debit cards that waive foreign transaction fees or prepaid travel cards, according to Monito.

Great question! A 1981 bronze Japanese 10 yen piece is worth less than $1 (USD) today (08/09/2025). There are VERY FEW 10 yen pieces from 1951 – current that are worth more than that. They are ALL VERY COMMON and still in circulation. Don’t take everything you read on ANY site like this to be 100% true or accurate.
