The exact origin of the military challenge coin is debated, but they’ve been an American military tradition for a century, serving to build unit pride, improve morale, and recognize accomplishments.

Ancient origins (possibly)

Some historians trace the concept back to the Roman Empire, where soldiers received special coins for valor in battle, sometimes bearing the legion’s insignia.

World War I beginnings (most popular theory)

The most popular origin story attributes the modern challenge coin to World War I. A wealthy American lieutenant had bronze medallions imprinted with his squadron’s emblem for every member. One pilot was shot down and captured. He used his medallion to prove his identity to French soldiers and avoid execution. Upon his safe return, it became a tradition for all squadron members to carry their coins at all times.

Other theories and evolution

  • Vietnam War: Another theory states the tradition started in Vietnam. An Army infantry bar required “outsiders” to buy drinks unless they could prove combat experience. A unit coin was eventually used as proof.
  • 1960s onward: A member of the 11th Special Forces Group started using overstamped coins as gifts. A commander of the 10th SFG adopted the idea, leading to the first minted unit coin. The practice spread widely by the mid-1980s.
  • Korean War: The oldest official challenge coins were minted during the Korean War for the 17th Korean Infantry, under Colonel “Buffalo Bill” Quinn, to commemorate their service.

Significance and modern use

Challenge coins represent achievement, membership, and affiliation to a specific group. They are awarded for exceptional performance, as keepsakes, and to foster team building and camaraderie. The “coin check” is a social tradition. Those caught without their coin might owe a round of drinks.

Today, challenge coins are prevalent within the US military, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Space Force, and Coast Guard. Other organizations use them, such as law enforcement, fire departments, and businesses. They are cherished as symbols of pride, service, and belonging.

One of the rarest and most valuable coins is the 17th Infantry Regiment Challenge Coin 1952 issue. William “Buffalo Bill” Quinn commissioned the coin to identify members of the 17th regiment. The nickname “Buffalo Bill” was given to Quinn as a radio call sign.

A superior officer usually awards a challenge coin to an officer as an acknowledgment of their hard work and dedication to law enforcement. In some cases, a challenge coin is given to citizens to thank them for their support.
